A heating system rarely fails out of nowhere. Most of the trouble we see started months or years earlier as a small habit that seemed harmless at the time. Here are the ones we run into most often around Cape May County homes.
It feels logical: close the vents in a room you're not using and redirect the heat elsewhere. In practice, forced-air systems are designed around a certain amount of airflow, and closing too many vents increases static pressure in the ductwork. That extra pressure makes the blower work harder, can cause the heat exchanger to overheat and cycle off prematurely, and over time shortens the life of the furnace itself. If a room runs too warm, a damper adjustment by a technician is a better fix than permanently shutting vents.
A clogged filter restricts airflow the same way closed vents do, just more gradually. Standard 1-inch fiberglass filters need monthly attention; pleated filters can usually go 60 to 90 days; thicker media filters built into the return can often go a full season. The schedule depends on the filter type printed on the frame, not a single universal rule, and it's worth checking rather than guessing.
This is the mistake that causes the most expensive damage. Turning the heat off entirely, or down to 50°F or below, in a home that will sit empty through a hard freeze risks frozen and burst pipes, which is a far costlier repair than the heating bill you were trying to save. A moderate setback, generally no lower than the mid-50s, with extra attention to any plumbing in exterior walls or crawl spaces, is the safer approach.
Furnaces recover quickly from a deep setback because they generate heat directly. Heat pumps work differently; they move heat rather than generate it, and a large temperature swing forces the system to lean on backup electric resistance heat strips to catch up, which is the least efficient mode the system has. A heat pump generally performs best with a fairly consistent setpoint rather than dramatic day-to-night swings.
Hydronic baseboard heat relies on convection: air flows in at the bottom, heats against the fins, and rises out the top. Furniture, curtains, or rugs pushed against a baseboard unit block that airflow and can leave a room cold even though the system is running fine. Keeping a few inches of clearance makes a noticeable difference.
An annual visit isn't just a filter swap. For gas and oil systems, it typically includes a combustion safety check, carbon monoxide testing, and inspection of the heat exchanger for cracks that can otherwise go unnoticed until they're a safety issue. Skipping it doesn't usually cause an immediate failure, but it does let small problems go undetected for an entire heating season.
